Finance Minister, the Honourable Audley Shaw, the Honourable Michael Henry, Minister of Transport and Works, Minister of State in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, the Honourable Daryl Vaz along with a team of special and technical advisors including Senator Aubyn Hill, Chief Technical Advisor to the Finance Minister left the island for a week-long visit to China.

During the week-long visit the Finance Minister and the team are expected to pay courtesy calls on China’s Minister of Finance and Minister of Transport.

Several business meetings have also been scheduled between the China Development Bank, the China Ex-Im Bank, China Construction Company, China Harbour Engineering Company, PowerChina and China-LAC Cooperation Fund and Jiuquan Iron and Steel Co. Ltd.

The meetings are aimed at advancing the economic co-operation between Jamaica and China.

The headline of the visit is the signing of an agreement with China Ex-Im Bank for the construction of the southeast coastal highway project which is billed at approximately US$384 million.

The construction project of the four lane highway, when it starts is expected to provide opportunities for employment and economic development for several persons in and around the environs of the parishes of St. Thomas and St. Andrew.
