The Full Story

The Government is investing in research and development (R&D) to build resilience and sustainability in agriculture.

The investment includes the previously announced expenditure of $6.3 billion, over the next six years, in the renovation of Bodles in St. Catherine and other research facilities across the island.

“As we look to the future of agriculture, investment in research and development is no longer optional; it is essential,” said Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness.

He was making his contribution to the 2025/2026 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on Thursday (March 20).

The Prime Minister said the Government is partnering with India and other world leaders in agricultural innovation to bring cutting-edge practices to Jamaica.

Furthermore, local tertiary institutions such as the University of the West Indies (UWI), the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE), and the University of Technology (UTech) will play a pivotal role in conducting research tailored to Jamaica’s unique agricultural landscape.

“To this end, we are converting CASE into a fully agricultural-based university,” the Prime Minister said.

“The Government is also partnering with these institutions to share important scientific work such as strategies to improve soil quality,” he added.
