Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring an inclusive economy where every Jamaican can participate.
Addressing residents, business interests and other stakeholders at the official opening of the 44 shops and kiosks rebuilt by the Government at the popular Border roadside eatery in St. Elizabeth, Dr. Holness said that the economy must be simplified, accessible, and relatable to all citizens.
“We want every Jamaican to feel that they are an important part of the economy, that they can articulate and navigate and get opportunities and do well and be successful,” she pointed out.
He said that the restoration of commercial activity in Border is in keeping with that objective of anchoring wealth within neighbourhoods.
The project involved rebuilding shops destroyed during Hurricane Melissa, adding parking, ablution and amenities designed to revitalise local economies and attract locals and visitors.
“This development represents more than a facelift; it is an investment in tourism and the broader economy, fostering entrepreneurship, and expanding local livelihoods,” the Prime Minister said, noting that many families rely on small-scale enterprises to fund their children’s education and everyday needs.
Dr. Holness urged the shop operators to adopt an investor mindset, telling them to “view your venture as part of the broader economy, seek growth, introduce new products or services, and improve the convenience for customers”.
