Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, says he had a fruitful conversation with President of the Republic of Rwanda, His Excellency Paul Kagame, during a courtesy call at Kings House today (April 14).

“[We spoke] to the experiences that they [the Rwandans] shared and the process that they went through in order to establish healing and reconciliation, which was tremendous. There’s a lot that we can learn from that.”

The courtesy call on the Governor-General is part of the schedule of activities for President Kagame, who is on a State visit to Jamaica from April 13 to 15.

He was scheduled to address a joint sitting of the Houses of Parliament later in the afternoon on Thursday (April 14).

On Friday, his schedule includes bilateral talks with Prime Minister, the Most Hon Andrew Holness and a government-to-government and public dialogue Think Jamaica 2022.

Rwanda is situated in Central Africa and bordered to the north by Uganda, east by Tanzania, south by Burundi and to the west by the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its capital is Kigali.

Rwanda’s main language is Kinyarwanda; however, English, French and Kiswahili are also declared official languages. The country’s culture includes music and dance, such as the Umushayayo and Intore.

Jamaica and Rwanda entered diplomatic relations on November 6, 1998.

This State visit by the president coincides with Jamaica’s 60th anniversary of Independence which is being celebrated from January 1 to December 31.

President Kagame is scheduled to leave the island on Friday afternoon (April 15).
