The Full Story

The Government has settled all judgement debts due at the end of the 2017/18 fiscal year, made possible through a provision of $1.309 billion from the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service.

Minister of Justice, Hon. Delroy Chuck, who made the announcement during his contribution to the 2018/19 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on May 22, said the Government was able to settle all 303 matters.

“All matters submitted from the Attorney General’s Chambers were paid.  We owe nothing! In fact, up to last Friday, May 18, we were able to pay up all our debts… 56 matters totalling just over $78 million,” he said.

The Minister also noted that for the previous fiscal year (2017/2018), the Government disbursed compensation to 418 persons affected by the May 2010 security forces operations in West Kingston.

He said the Ministry paid out $55.84 million to victims directly and transferred $134.57 million to the Administrator General’s Department to compensate the estates of deceased persons.

Meanwhile, Mr. Chuck noted that while the Government satisfies its indebtedness for negligence and misconduct of public servants, he is urging the police, medical personnel and other public servants to act with due care and precaution in exercising their duties.

He pointed out that the Ministry did not incur these debts, but had to satisfy them from its budgetary allocation.
