The Government is moving to meet the growing demand for cold storage space within the agricultural sector.
Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, said a 350-square-metre cold-storage facility is currently being constructed in Content, Kirkvine, Manchester, at a cost of $124 million.
Making his contribution to the 2025/26 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives, on Tuesday (May 27), he noted that this facility will benefit more than 1,500 farmers and producers.
Mr. Green also informed of the 2,635 cubic metres of cold storage that will be available for use by farmers and producers in Coleyville, Manchester.
“We are not stopping there, we are spending $165 million to establish a 6,103-square-foot facility at the Ebony Park Agro-Park in Clarendon, including 2,500 square feet of cold/chill room space.
This cold room facility will be able to hold 600,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables,” he said.
In addition, through the CARICOM/New Zealand cold storage project, a renewable-energy-powered cold storage will be established in Flagaman, Pedro Plains.
For Essex Valley, Mr. Green said the Ministry is establishing one of the largest agricultural storage facilities in the Caribbean, which will span 24,500 square feet and has the capacity to hold 22 containers of food.
It will include dedicated cold storage, ambient storage, a purée processing area and a brine preservation section.
Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, will officially launch this new storage facility in June of this year.
