The Full Story

Gospel music will be integrated in the month-long celebration of reggae, which will take place in February, says Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Minister, Hon. Olivia Grange.

Speaking at the Launch of Reggae Month 2024 at Fellowship Tabernacle in Kingston on Sunday (January 28), the Minister informed that the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) will host a series of gospel events during the month.

The celebration, under the theme ‘Come ketch di RIDDIM’, will also include a tribute to the late Dennis Brown, dubbed the “Crown Prince of Reggae’; a musical tribute to Reggae Icons; a Reggae Gold Awards; Dancehall awards; Young Reggae Ambassadors event; JaRIA Open University symposium; Dancehall week; and a Children of the Icons concert.

Highlighting the significance of reggae and the reason Reggae Month has been observed in Jamaica since 2008, the Minister said: “Reggae is not just a genre but also a force that transcends borders and speaks directly to the soul.

“It’s a way of life. It continues to serve as the voice of the marginalised, the poor, the humble and a beacon of hope during times of war, political unrest and social injustice,” she added.

This year’s celebration is also significant for the JaRIA, which is marking its 50th anniversary and the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), which is observing 60 years of unearthing, showcasing and developing the talents of Jamaicans.

“We also honour the memory of the late legendary Ibo Cooper whose legacy laid the foundation for our music and culture,” Ms. Grange said.

Mr. Cooper passed away on October 12, 2023.
