Governor- General, His Excellency, the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, has commended the staff at the Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital, for providing quality healthcare to the people of Westmoreland and surrounding parishes.
"I commend all the staff of the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital for the great job you are doing as you improve the levels of patient care being offered,” he stated.
The Governor General was speaking following a tour of the hospital on Wednesday (Dec. 12), where he delivered gifts and offered words of comfort to patients and workers. He was accompanied by Lady Allen.
He said it is good that this hospital provides a fairly wide range of services, which bring quality health care closer to the people of the parishes served.
"You have included, in your service to the people, services that are well needed such as laparoscopic surgery, placed trained nurses in the accident and emergency department, and modernised the methodology of care for maternal patients. No doubt, mothers and caregivers welcome the refurbishing of the labour and delivery suite,” the Governor General stated.
Turning to expansion work underway to provide a new accident and emergency ward, and new operating theatre, he stated that: “This is good, not only for your patients, but I believe that your health professionals demand the best possible facilities for their life-saving expertise”.
"I hope that you will be successful in your efforts to recruit additional competent staff in critical areas such as orthopedics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and general surgery, so that you can reduce the number of transfers to the Cornwall Regional Hospital,” he stated.
More than 43,000 persons were treated at the hospital’s accident and emergency department in 2011.
