The Government Electrical Regulator (GER), established under the Electricity Act, has made considerable progress since its inception on November 1, 2021, says Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Hon. Daryl Vaz.
Making his contribution to the 2024/25 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on June 4, the Minister said the GER has licensed 290 private electrical inspectors, representing a more than 1,300 per cent increase when compared to the previous regime, where there were only 20 electrical inspectors.
“In addition, there are now 1,676 Registered Electricians across all 14 parishes. Consequently, for fiscal year 2023/24 the GER was able to register 20,665 customers through the GER Portal, and some 28,935 inspections were conducted and submitted,” he added.
For the fiscal year 2023/2024, the GER conducted more than 3,506 compliance reviews of the electrical installation works done by registered electricians and certified by private licensed electrical inspectors.
“This represents an increase of 14 per cent from the previous year. These compliance reviews are aimed at ensuring that the quality and standard of electrical inspections by electricians and inspectors are maintained,” Mr. Vaz said.
