Recently installed principal of G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport in St. Catherine, Dr. Joyce Graham-Royal, says she is aiming to transform the institution into a university college.

As part of the process, she said, a number of programmes will be improved and new ones introduced.

“My first order of business is to start the process of transferring the college into a university college and so we will have to revamp a number of our current programmes and focus more on areas of specialisation,” Dr. Graham-Royal told JIS News in a recent interview.

Among the new offerings being considered are programmes in sports sciences, sports tourism, sports management, sports journalism and sports nutrition, the latter of which, she said, is very important. “A lot of athletes get injured because their nutrition need improvement and we want to focus on that area to provide an injury-free sporting environment for them,” she stated.

Also in the planning, Dr. Graham-Royal said, is an online degree programme to accommodate foreign students from as far as Indonesia and China.

“Online is the way to go. Because of the economic situation globally, a number of prospective students, who have expressed a desire to participate in our programmes cannot afford to come to Jamaica, so we have to take the programmes to them,” she pointed out.

She informed that the platform for the online degree programme has already been set as the college now offers a masters programme in collaboration with the University of Technology (UTech), which includes a number of online courses.

The G. C. Foster College principal also pointed to the establishment of a sports research and data analysis centre “because a lot of people know a lot but it is not documented.”

Dr. Joyce Graham-Royal was appointed as the fifth principal of G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport in August. Prior to her appointment, she served as Chief Physical Education Officer in the Ministry of Education.
