The funeral service for Alton Ellis, the singer regarded as Jamaica’s greatest proponent of Rocksteady music, will take place at the St. Andrew Scots Kirk United Church at 43A Duke Street in downtown Kingston on Monday 3rd November 2008, starting at 11:00 a.m.
Mr. Ellis, who died on the night of October 10, in England where he resided, will be interred at Dovecot.
Upon his passing, the Honourable Olivia “Babsy” Grange, Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, described Alton Ellis as a true pioneer whose creativity and inventiveness provided music to reflect on and music for dancing pleasure.
Minister Grange said that, “even as we mourn the great Alton Ellis, we must give thanks for his monumental contribution to the development of Jamaica’s popular music.”
