The funeral service for Alton Ellis, the singer considered to be the island’s greatest proponent of Rocksteady music, takes place at St. Andrew’s Scots Kirk United Church at 43A Duke Street in downtown Kingston today, starting at 11:00 a.m.
Mr. Ellis, who died in England, where he resided, on the night of October 10, will be interred at Dovecot.
Upon his passing, the Honourable Olivia “Babsy” Grange, Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, described Alton Ellis as a true pioneer whose creativity and inventiveness provided us with music to reflect on and music for dancing pleasure.
Minister Grange said that, “even as we mourn the great Alton Ellis, we must give thanks for his monumental contribution to the development of Jamaica’s popular music.”
