The Full Story

A free health fair and fun day will be held at the Annotto Bay Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in St. Mary on Emancipation Day, Monday, August 1.

The event, which will get underway at 8:00 a.m., is being hosted by the Indian High Commission in Jamaica in collaboration with the Ashish Health Care and Ashish Community Health Organisation, a non-profit entity based in Annotto Bay.

More than 2,000 persons are expected to attend the ‘Free Fun Fair,’ which will include health and dental checks and a slate of activities to entertain the entire family.

“It is open to everybody across Jamaica who is able to make it. There is no exception,” Founder of the Ashish Community Health Organisation, Dr. Nagendra Chandolu, told JIS News.

“It’s a holiday and everybody needs some relaxation and refreshment. We are happy to give back to the community of Annotto Bay and surrounding areas that have supported us,” he said.

Among the scheduled activities are a yoga session, football and netball competitions, children’s games and concert with prizes awarded to the top participants, a food festival featuring Indian cuisine and a cultural segment showcasing Indian fashion and talent.

The day will culminate with the screening of a documentary chronicling 175 years of Indian heritage in Jamaica.

Dr. Chandolu said that several individuals and entities have come on board to provide pharmaceuticals and items for back-to-school packages, refreshment and snacks, and prizes for the various competitions.

Among them is Indus Pharma, which donated 100 footballs and 200 back-to- school kits, Indies Pharma Jamaica Limited, Hi-Tech Lab, MSN Pharma, R.A. Williams Distributors, as well as several small businesses in St. Mary.

Additionally, a team of doctors and a pharmacist will be on location to conduct health checks and dispense medication.

Dr. Chandolu, who operates a family medical practice in Annotto Bay, told JIS News that the entity is pleased to partner with the Indian High Commission in staging the fair. He said that High Commissioner, His Excellency Rungsung Masakui, is scheduled to attend.

Dr. Chandolu noted that the fair coincides with several milestones for Jamaica and India.

“It is the 60th Independence celebration for Jamaica this year, India is celebrating 75 years of Independence this year, and we are both celebrating 175 years of Indians coming to Jamaica. So, it’s very nice that we’re doing something like this,” he said.

Dr. Chandolu is anticipating a “wonderful day” and looks forward to persons from across Jamaica coming to Annotto Bay on August 1, “to have a great time and return home with lasting memories and blessings.”
