Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, J.C. Hutchinson has informed that the Ministry is to undertake the construction and rehabilitation of four irrigation systems.
“The irrigation systems to be built and/or rehabilitated are Yallahs in St. Thomas; New Forrest/Duffs House in Manchester; Colbeck and St. Dorothy in St. Catherine; and Essex Valley in St. Elizabeth,” Mr. Hutchinson said as he made his contribution to the 2008/09 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on May 21.
He also announced that the National Irrigation Commission Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture are now developing the necessary plans to provide irrigation water to the farmers of Kitson Town and its environs.
Mr. Hutchinson also informed that the Hounslow Irrigation System in St. Elizabeth has been extensively overhauled for improvements in distribution and efficiency.
“The existing five wells were rehabilitated and distribution improved. It will irrigate approximately 486 hectares and the net increase in annual farm household income from the project will be $31.4 million,” the Minister said.
The Hounslow Irrigation System will be commissioned into operation on May 28 by Prime Minister, Bruce Golding.
