The former Metcalfe Street Adult Remand Centre is to be converted into a Remand Facility for Boys and a contractual agreement entered into with the Jamaica Defence Force to renovate the facility. Cabinet has approved the recruitment of Correctional Officers for the Facility.
Minister with responsibility for Information, Daryl Vaz said a Submission to this effect was made by the Ministry of National Security. He was speaking at a Post Cabinet Press Briefing on March 30 at Jamaica House.
“Cabinet indicated that the establishment of a dedicated juvenile Remand Centre was of high priority for the Government of Jamaica, in order to appropriately house boys’ currently in Police lock-ups and adult facilities across the island and meet the requirements of international guidelines and domestic law”.
The Information Minister said Cabinet also instructed that all the stakeholder Government entities coordinate to ensure that the facility was established and operational by April 1 as scheduled and that the necessary budgetary provisions be identified for the 2011/2012 financial year for the staffing of the establishment. Mr. Vaz said this will enable the operation and management of the Metcalfe Street Remand Centre for Boys.
