Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Hon. Dr. Kenneth Baugh, departed the island this afternoon (Monday June 1) to attend the 39th General Assembly of the Organisation of American States (OAS) in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, 2nd to the 3rd of June, 2009.
The OAS is the main multilateral forum in the Western Hemisphere addressing a range of issues pertaining to co-operation, democracy, human rights, economic and social concerns. “Toward a Culture of Non-Violence”, will be the theme of the Summit and participants will focus attention on key issues such as: the Development Agenda, Hemispheric Fund for Haiti, OAS/Cuba Relations, Security Concerns for Small Island States, with special attention on violence and Crime and related issues.
A highlight of the Assembly, will be the meeting between CARICOM Foreign Ministers and US Secretary of State, Mrs. Hillary Clinton. Minister Baugh, who is also the Chairman of CARICOM’s Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR), will co-chair this meeting which is scheduled for tomorrow.
Some important issues which will be discussed include the proposed Summit between CARICOM Heads and President Obama, trade and investment, the current financial crisis, regional security, energy security/alternative energy, climate change, disaster mitigation, immigration, financial services and Cuba. Minister Baugh is also scheduled to address the Summit on Wednesday morning.
He is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with OAS Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza, Canada’s Minister of State in the Foreign Ministry, Hon. Peter Kent, the Foreign Ministers of Mexico and Serbia, Ambassador H.E. Patricia Espinosa and H.E. Luk Jeremic, respectively.
