The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) is intensifying efforts to ensure the safety and preparedness of firefighters in responding to fires involving electric vehicles (EVs) and lithium-ion batteries.
Commissioner Stewart Beckford told JIS News that, to date, more than 700 firefighters have received specialised training in relation to such emergencies.
“It is not just about electric vehicles; devices like laptops pose significant risks due to their lithium-ion batteries. So, we are training our persons, as best as we can, to be fully aware of, and apprise themselves of how to treat these fires,” Commissioner Beckford said.
Key partners in the private sector, such as Jamaica Public Service (JPS) and ATL Automotive Group, have also played a vital role in supporting the training efforts.
Looking ahead, the Commissioner noted that the JFB remains committed to exploring additional training opportunities.
This includes the possibility of sending personnel overseas for more specialised instructions.
“We want to make sure that all firefighters, especially those who are on the front line, are appropriately trained, because we do not want any unnecessary injuries or fatalities during firefighting operations,” the Commissioner added.
He said that by prioritising collaboration and proactive training initiatives, the JFB continues to demonstrate its dedication to enhancing firefighter safety and effective emergency response.
