The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) is making special provisions for promoters and event planners to acquire a Fire Safety Permit, to confirm the safety of venues being used to host events this holiday season.
Public Relations Officer for the JFB, Emeleo Ebanks, told JIS News that a Fire Safety Permit is required for every event, and that persons can now acquire a permit within a day or two, a process which normally takes five working days.
“These provisions are just for the Christmas season and going into the New Year, because we understand that many persons are hosting events and some may not have known or remembered about this permit. Usually, this permit requires at least five working days to be processed. Applying and receiving a Fire Safety Permit assures the Jamaica Fire Brigade that the promoters and planners took the necessary safety precautions to ensure the safety of their patrons,” Mr. Ebanks said.
He explained that when applying for the permit, promoters are required to provide an outline or floor plan of the venue, along with detailed plans about how the venue will be coordinated.
“This will help us to guide persons regarding the numbers of patrons that can be accommodated, the size and number of exits, where fire extinguishers need to be and how the wires need to be placed,” Mr. Ebanks explained.
“Promoters and event planners need to understand that by retrofitting locations to their liking, they are sometimes committing safety breeches which they are unable to identify as they do not have a trained eye as do members of the Jamaica Fire Brigade,” he added.
The Public Relations Officer also told JIS News that there are Fire Safety Monitors who will act in the best interest of the patrons’ safety. These persons are available to provide assistance to promoters when they are hosting events.
Mr. Ebanks informed that there is a processing fee of $6,000 for the permit, “however, based on our judgement, some promoters and planners may need the assistance of Fire Safety Monitors at their events which will attract a different cost.”
