The renowned Couples Tower Isle in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, has seen its fair share of history since its inception in 1947.

Over the years, the resort has stood as a symbol of excellence in Jamaica’s hospitality industry.

This year, however, marks a significant milestone for the resort as it welcomed its first female General Manager, Charmaine Bailey, who has been nominated to receive the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry from the Government.

Charmaine Bailey, a name synonymous with dedication and commitment in the world of hospitality, has spent 38 years climbing the ladder of success.

Her journey, punctuated with hard work, determination and passion, has led her to the forefront of one of the most iconic resorts in Jamaica.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be the first female General Manager at Couples Tower Isle. I think it was well deserved. I worked hard and I have given a lot to tourism and hospitality,” she tells JIS News.

Ms. Bailey’s story is one of perseverance and unyielding determination.

She began her career with Couples Resorts 29 years ago as an operations manager.

The ensuing nearly three decades has seen her rise through the ranks with dedication that is truly commendable.

“On April 1, 2023, which is also my birthday, I got a really nice birthday gift by becoming the General Manager for this resort (Couples Tower Isle),” she shares.

Ms. Bailey is a true testament to the adage that hard work pays off. Her appointment as the first female General Manager for Couples Tower Isle is a monumental achievement, not just for her, but for women in Jamaica’s hospitality industry.

Her dedication to the industry has not only earned her the prestigious position but also a nomination for the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry.

This recognition, coming in the same year as her promotion, holds profound significance for her.

“I am so excited, and I felt elated when I first got a call from the Governor General’s Office to say you have been nominated for this badge of honour,” she expresses.

“I am very grateful that I was selected because there were so many nominees, and I am sure a lot of people have been in their positions for 50 years or more. But tourism is really doing well and I think this is an encouragement to persons who want to become a part of the industry. It is rewarding… once people see that there is something to get from it,” she adds.

Ms. Bailey credits her success to her love for the hospitality sector and her unwavering determination as well as the fact that she worked “twice as hard” and overcame many challenges.

She urges her fellow Jamaicans, particularly the youth, to pursue their dreams and work hard.

Ms. Bailey’s journey began in Falmouth, Trelawny, and took her through William Knibb Memorial High School in the parish, then later the University of Technology, Jamaica, in Kingston and the Culinary Institute of America in the United States.

She dabbled in various roles, including restaurant management and airline catering, before finding her true calling in the world of hotels.
Her extensive experience, which includes stints with Versair, Sandals, SuperClubs, and finally.
