Local stakeholders are eagerly awaiting the completion of the US$274-million Montego Bay Perimeter Road project, which promises to boost business by alleviating the city’s long-standing traffic issues.
The new roadway, which is being constructed as a bypass for the city, is 55 per cent completed and scheduled for delivery in May 2026.
It includes the Montego River Ridge Bridge, which is at 90 per cent completion.
From improved access to tourist attractions to enhancing local commerce and quality of life, the residents are looking forward to the benefits that the project will bring.
“This project has been a long time coming, but it is heartening to see it nearing completion,” says restaurant owner Lowell Spence.
He notes that the traffic situation in Montego Bay has been unbearable, especially for those who rely on customers from outside the city.
“This road will change everything. It will provide a much-needed alternative route for both locals and tourists,” he notes.
“Currently, traffic congestion often deters cruise passengers from disembarking, causing them to miss out on opportunities to explore the vibrant culture and attractions of Montego Bay, such as the renowned Jimmy Cliff Boulevard,” he adds.

Attraction owners in nearby areas such as Ocho Rios are also optimistic about the changes that the new road will bring.
“Right now, we have to advise our guests to leave early to avoid traffic jams,” local tour operator David Grant, tells JIS News.
“With the completion of the perimeter road, we expect guests will have more time to explore and enjoy what Jamaica has to offer,” he adds.
Residents are also hopeful that the new road will reduce travel times and make their daily commutes more manageable.
“We have been stuck in traffic for far too long. This road will bring great reprieve for all of us,” says resident Angela Smith. “It’s going to make a huge difference in our lives,” she tells JIS News.
President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), Robin Russell, emphasises the importance of the bypass for the tourism industry.
He says that the current traffic situation is a significant deterrent for cruise passengers.
“Many choose to stay onboard their ships rather than risk being late for departure. The new road will provide a seamless experience for tourists and allow them to enjoy our beautiful island,” he tells JIS News.
National Security Minister, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, who is Member of Parliament for St. James North Western, highlighted the project’s broader implications for community safety and economic development.
“Improving traffic flow is not just about convenience but also about enhancing the overall quality of life in Montego Bay. This road will facilitate better access to essential services and improve safety for all road users,” he points out.
Tourism Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, is also expressing his enthusiasm for the completion of the Montego Bay Perimeter Road, noting that the project is not just a win for residents but a game-changer for the tourism sector.
“We want to ensure that visitors have easy access to our attractions without the worry of being stuck in traffic,” he tells JIS News.
He says that for residents, business owners, and tourists alike, the project represents hope for a more connected and vibrant future.
“The completion of this road is a testament to the Government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the experience of both residents and visitors alike,” he adds.
