Jermaine Hurst is being recognised for demonstrating exceptional courage and compassion in preventing a potential victim attempting suicide, thereby saving a life and inspiring hope in others facing similar struggles.
On National Heroes Day, October 21, Mr. Hurst will receive the Badge of Honour for Gallantry at the annual National Honours and Awards ceremony, to be held at King’s House.
His mental health advocacy sojourn started with a simple yet profound mantra – ‘courage is just making that first step’.
This is the guiding philosophy that Mr. Hurst used, as he reached out to an individual in despair.
He told JIS News that on April 19, 2023, he visited an area of the Portmore Causeway and noticed a woman alone there.
He stated that while speaking with the lady, he realised that she wanted to commit suicide.
“God sent me there at the right time because if I wasn’t there, anything could have happened. I talked to her while she was there but while I was talking to her, I called the police so they could hear the conversation…In the conversation I made sure to say things to let the police know that I was trying to help the lady,” Mr. Hurst said.
He thanked the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Fire Brigade for their swift action in responding to the call made to save the mother of three life.
Mr. Hurst’s approach exemplifies the importance of human connection, a theme he consistently emphasises.
In addition, his ability to listen and provide guidance has not only changed lives but has fostered an environment where individuals can feel safe to share their struggles.
“I often feel tired after some situations but the greatest thing I could be is of help to persons in need. Just having someone to talk to can make all the difference,” he stated.
Throughout his work, Mr. Hurst has encountered numerous individuals seeking solace in their darkest hours.
Among them were a male and female who, were on the brink of giving up.
“Both persons are [now] doing extremely well today,” he stated.
Mr. Hurst draws strength and encouragement from knowing that his efforts yield tangible results, pointing out that, “knowing that I’ve made a difference keeps me going.”
He added that he consistently carves out time and strives to be available whenever someone in need reaches out for assistance.
He is also advocating for greater mental health awareness, noting that “we all have a role to play.”
His vision includes training individuals with lived experiences to become advocates themselves.
“When you talk about your experiences, you help others feel less alone,” Mr. Hurst stated.
Meanwhile, Mr. Hurst said when he received the call from the Office of the Prime Minister that he will be receiving a national award, he shared the news with family, friends and acquaintances.
“People are eagerly looking forward to the ceremony, to see me receive my award,” he stated.
Reflecting on the path that he has traversed, Mr. Hurst declared that he has no regrets about doing so.
“Every ounce of energy, courage, everything, I put into this has been worth it,” he told JIS News, while encouraging others to engage in conversations about mental health.
It’s about being brave enough to let others know they’re not alone,” Mr. Hurst said.
