Behind the success of the Brown’s Hall Police station in St. Catherine, which was recently named the top station in Area 5, is the determined leadership of Station Commander, Sergeant Natoya Mighty, who emphasises a hands-on approach and meticulous attention to detail.
Sergeant Mighty, who leads a small but dedicated team of 15 police personnel, comprising one sergeant and 14 constables, is elated and grateful for the station’s achievement.
“With the work that we are doing at Brown’s Hall, I knew I had the opportunity to get the top station, but it took me as a surprise. The team is proud to be the top station,” Sergeant Mighty shares with JIS News in an interview.
She says she firmly believes that her station’s victory is rooted in her leadership philosophy – leading by example and fostering engagement of all team members.
“Being the commander, I ensure that my team, whatever they are doing, I am a part of it. So, I lead from the front and ensure that everybody has hands on deck, ensuring that the station records are well kept and all the necessary information are gathered and placed within those records,” the Station Commander continues.
Record keeping is one of the areas that was assessed by the Police Civilian Oversight Authority (PCOA) for the Transforming Our Police Service (TOPS) programme competition.
The PCOA also examined station administration, station facilities, how prisoners in custody are managed, and customer service. Brown’s Hall excelled in all the areas assessed.
Sergeant Mighty emphasises that the cornerstone of their success is an unwavering commitment to the mandates of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), despite challenges in the communities they serve.
“Brown’s Hall is a rural area, and it is a huge area to police… . A lot of farmers are there, so from time to time we have [incidents of] praedial larceny and simple larceny. We have a few robberies, too,” the Station Commander shares.
She emphasises that despite these incidents, the team is active in the community and ensures that its presence is being felt through active mobile and foot patrols, among other initiatives.
“We have continuous, widely publicised meetings, engaging the public. We do community meetings [and] we do spot meetings. We are out there in the community interacting with the citizens,” Sergeant Mighty affirms.
In thanking her team, the Station Commander made it clear that the station’s triumph was a collective one.
“I just want each member to realise that without their contribution, this would not have been possible. If everybody were not up to it, we could not have achieved it,” she tells JIS News.
The Station Commander also encourages her colleagues across Area 5’s 39 stations to continue to do their best as they protect and serve Jamaica’s citizens, acknowledging that every station has the potential to shine.
Meanwhile, Commanding Officer for Area 5, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Christopher Phillips, echoes her call to action to officers, while noting that the top-performing stations have set the benchmark for excellence, demonstrating that transformation is achievable through vision, accountability, innovation, and teamwork.
“We will ensure that we continue to strengthen our leadership, supervisory effectiveness, accountability, and performance management with a view to enhance service delivery and public confidence and trust,” he maintains.
The Area Commander encourages leaders in the JCF to ensure that every member of their team embodies the mindset of a “top cop” to ensure service excellence across the police force.
“This mindset is not just about individual excellence but about fostering a culture of service, integrity, and sterling commitment to our communities. In modern policing, the mindset of a top cop represents the pinnacle of professionalism, empathy, and resilience,” he tells JIS News.
