The Full Story

The Government will provide approximately 131 housing solutions for Jamaica’s most vulnerable during the year.

Making his contribution to the 2022/23 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives recently, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, said that at least 11 new concrete structures will be built for indigent persons in St. Mary, Hanover, and Westmoreland.

Additionally, he informed that through a joint initiative with the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, 120 social housing units will be constructed in various parts of the country.

The Indigent Housing Programme, which falls under the Local Government Ministry, offers housing solutions to the registered poor and is spearheaded by the Poor Relief Department of each municipality.

The Social Housing Programme was established in 2018 by the Prime Minister as the housing component of the Housing, Opportunity, Production and Employment (HOPE) Programme under the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation.

It was developed to improve the housing condition of the country’s poor and disadvantaged population by providing quality, affordable and sustainable housing.
