KINGSTON, October 11 (JIS):

An Agricultural Display, Media Highlight and FarmHers Market will be held on Tuesday, October 15, to observe International Day of Rural Women (IDRW) 2024.

Under the theme, ‘Agricultural Resilience: Achieving a Sustainable Future’, the events will take place on the Roof of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport (MCGES), 4-6 Trafalgar Road, Kingston, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The IDRW activities, organised by the Bureau of Gender Affairs (BGA), are a part of a month-long celebration to highlight rural women and girls and their contribution to the enhancement of rural life and the role they play in the elimination of poverty and supporting their families and communities.

Principal Director of the BGA, in the Ministry, Sharon Coburn Robinson, told JIS News that the event will involve partners and agencies that engage in agriculture and social development.

She mentioned that activities are being organised in each parish to connect with rural women, particularly those who were affected by the recent passage of Hurricane Beryl.

“We want to continue that focus on those families as well as small businesses that were significantly affected, so we are doing activities that would also assist them to be able to recover and to continue the recovery efforts,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Coburn Robinson said that the BGA will be partnering with the Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica (PBCJ) to create a video feature aimed at highlighting several women and girls in agriculture.

“We will select a few women who are doing very well in farming, have an innovation or have created some new ways of marketing their products,” she explained.

Mrs. Coburn Robinson said that the video will be shared on various social media platforms to highlight the work of the women, their farm and produce business, contributing to the nation’s food security.

She noted that sharing the video aims to inspire new ideas and help women recognise that their achievements are tangible contributions to sustainable development.
