The Full Story

Falmouth Public General Hospital in Trelawny on Friday (January 23), received a cheque valued at US$21,000, to assist with post-hurricane melissa recovery efforts at the facility.

The funds were raised and donated by Excellence Oyster Bay resort through the We Care FPGH (Falmouth Public General Hospital) Limited, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting the health facility.

The donation comes as restoration of the hospital remains a top priority for the parish, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) and the Western Regional Health Authority (WRHA).

In his address, Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Carlington McLennon, said that the institution suffered extensive damage during the category five system, losing an estimated 90 per cent of its roofing.

“I think it was one week or two weeks after the hurricane melissa, I was approached by Winsome Harper of We Care FPGH and Bealias Jimenez of Excellence Oyster Bay, and they expressed the desire to assist [and] here we are,” Mr. McLennon stated.

He noted that while many have toured the damaged compound and expressed intentions to help, Excellence Oyster Bay followed through to deliver tangible support.

As such, Mr. McLennon said the public handover of the cheque was intentional, as it not only aimed to acknowledge the contribution, but also to encourage other well-wishers in the community to lend their support during this critical rebuilding phase.

For her part, Ms. Harper said that as of early 2026, the full restoration of Falmouth Public General Hospital remains a central focus for key health stakeholders.

She explained that the donation formed part of a long-standing partnership between We Care – FPGH and Excellence Oyster Bay, driven this time by the hotel’s Share the Love initiative.

Under the programme, the resort committed to collecting a donation from each guest through late 2025, with the proceeds earmarked specifically to support the hospital’s recovery.

“There’s also support for the paediatric patients. So, in addition to the financial aid that they are giving, Excellence’s guests and partners have come together and contributed gifts and essential supplies, as well as toys to bring hope to the children in the paediatric clinic of the hospital,” Ms. Harper explained.

Representing Excellence Oyster Bay, Mr. Jimenez, indicated that community development and giving back are central to the hotel.

He also acknowledged the commitment of his staff and management team in supporting the initiative and said the donation was intended to send a clear message that the hospital was not alone in its recovery efforts.
