The Rotary Club of Port Antonio will be sponsoring an eye clinic in Port Antonio from Monday, January 22 to Thursday, January 25 for the purpose of conducting eye surgeries on needy persons, free of cost.
The clinic, which will be held at 28 Harbour Street in Port Antonio, will be implemented in close collaboration with the Kingston Public Hospital and the Ministry of Health, and will facilitate the removal of cataracts and the treatment of other eye defects.
Operations will be conducted by a team of doctors from Surgical Eye Expedition International in the United States of America.
Past President of the Rotary Club of Port Antonio, Satya Parvataneni, said screening for the clinic has been in progress since October of last year, adding that 65 persons have so far been selected for various types of operation.
He said that in addition to persons from various communities in Portland, residents from the neighbouring parishes of St. Mary and St. Thomas will be assisted. He added that tests for glaucoma are also conducted as part of the screening process.
Mr. Parvataneni noted that screening for surgery will end on Saturday, January 20, and appealed to persons in need of such treatment to visit the screening site at 28 Harbour Street by that date.
