Expanded air connectivity is central to Jamaica’s tourism recovery and long-term growth, says Tourism Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, who notes that several new and increased flight routes are now coming on stream.

Speaking at the reopening of Bahia Principe Runaway Bay in St. Ann on Wednesday (April 1), Mr. Bartlett highlighted significant developments in airlift arrangements across key international markets.

He disclosed that Jamaica is experiencing strong growth in the South American market, driven by increased flight activity through Copa Airlines into Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St. James.

Additionally, Mr. Bartlett indicated that discussions with other major airline partners are ongoing to expand capacity even further.

The Minister also highlighted enhanced connectivity from Colombia, noting that additional flights have already been introduced.

“We announced that there are now three more flights out of Medellin to be connected with three from Bogota… [that’s] six flights a week coming from Colombia into Jamaica,” he said.

Mr. Bartlett further noted expanded routes from Europe, including the United Kingdom and Germany, as part of efforts to diversify Jamaica’s tourism markets.

“Virgin [Airlines] just made another announcement [for] four flights coming into Montego Bay now, from Heathrow [London]. Condor [Airlines] is also stepping up… as a result of the code sharing with Emirates,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bartlett emphasised that increased room stock and expanded flight capacity must advance in tandem.

“The whole purpose of our being and building tourism is driven by air connectivity. We’re bringing the airlines here so that when more rooms come on, more airlines are going to be interested in coming,” the Minister added.

Mr. Bartlett said these developments will enhance Jamaica’s competitiveness and ensure sustained growth in visitor arrivals.
