The Full Story

Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, says that all event fees for three Catholic schools – Chetwood Memorial Primary, Mount Alvernia Prep, and Mount Alvernia High – will be waived, as part of the celebrations honouring their centennial.

Speaking at a church service at the Roman Catholic Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Montego Bay, St. James, on January 26 as part of the celebration activities, Mayor Vernon said it is only fitting, considering the pivotal role each has played in shaping the lives of countless students in Montego Bay and its surrounding areas.

He said the initiative, which must undergo a formal approval process at the St. James Municipality, is aimed at alleviating some of the financial burdens the schools will face as they embark on a year-long celebration of their rich history and contributions to the community.

“The St. James Municipality is proud to stand behind these institutions that have nurtured generations of leaders, innovators, and change-makers,” said Mayor Vernon.

“Waiving these processing fees is a small token of our appreciation for the invaluable contribution of education these schools have provided over the past century,” he added.

The Mayor said that the Franciscan Sisters from Allegany in the United States, who established the schools a century ago, must be immensely proud of their legacy.

“These institutions have not only educated young minds but have also instilled values that resonate throughout the community. The alumni of these schools have significantly contributed to nation-building and social development,” he noted.

In addition to the fee waiver, the Municipality, once the request and nature of events are outlined, plans to support a special day of recognition for the three schools. This day will honour the achievements of the three schools and the impact they have had on the community over the years.

“Celebrating our 100th anniversary is a monumental occasion for all of us at Mount Alvernia Prep,” said Principal, Theresa Cherian.

“We are grateful for the Mayor’s generous gesture, which highlights the importance of education in Montego Bay. This support will allow us to focus on creating memorable experiences for our students and alumni during this landmark year,” she said.

Mount Alvernia High School’s Principal, Kayon Whyne, noted that the fee waiver “is a significant boost for us as we plan our centennial celebrations”.

“We are committed to honouring our past while looking forward to a bright future, and this support from the Municipality reinforces our mission to educate and inspire the next generation,” she added.

Chetwood Memorial Primary School’s Acting Principal, Debbie Kelly-Clarke, expressed her gratitude as well.

“This gesture from the Mayor is a testament to the strong partnership between our schools and the Municipality. It allows us to dedicate more resources to enriching our students’ educational experiences as we celebrate a century of excellence,” she said.
