The European Union (EU) is advancing flagship initiatives in Jamaica to accelerate the island’s digital transition, strengthen climate change adaptation, and develop a green logistics hub.
These initiatives were highlighted by Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the European Parliament, David McAllister, during the EU in Jamaica 50th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture, delivered on March 20 at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Regional Headquarters in St. Andrew, under the theme ‘50 Years of EU-Jamaica Partnership: Achievements and Future Prospects’.
During his presentation, Mr. McAllister noted that the EU is supporting Jamaica’s digital transition, focusing on improving connectivity infrastructure, strengthening information and communications technology (ICT) skills, advancing business digitalisation, and fostering a fair, competitive telecommunications market.
He outlined that “crucial steps include investing in secure networks… and paving the way for access to fibre and secure 5G deployment”.
Regarding the climate-change adaptation initiative, Mr. McAllister noted that it is centred on advancing sustainable development while supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
This, he further pointed out, will be done through three main components: “the creation of a green bonds market under the Global Green Bond Initiative, investing in an open electricity market to develop modern and resilient energy infrastructure, and the development of a new water treatment plant to meet the demand for water in the Kingston Metropolitan Area, Portmore and Spanish Town”.
Meanwhile, Mr. McAllister said the EU is supporting Jamaica’s efforts to develop a green logistics hub by investing in infrastructure and advancing regulatory reforms, aimed at transforming Kingston’s harbour into a world-class hub for private investment.
“This will enable Kingston to become a green port and a key junction in the global green shipping corridor,” he added.
Mr. McAllister emphasised that these flagship collaborations demonstrate the strong partnership between the EU and Jamaica, providing a solid foundation for continued deep cooperation in the future.
