The Full Story

Estimates are currently being prepared for improvement work on the Ocho Rios Market in St. Ann.

The work will primarily focus on addressing sanitary facilities and enhancing the grounds at the entrance of the market, said Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie.

The Minister, who toured the facility recently, said he understands the challenges being faced by vendors and affirmed the commitment of the Ministry and the St. Ann Municipal Corporation in addressing the issues.

“I walked there and I felt the pressure and I know what the vendors are feeling. I have asked the Chief Technical Officer in the Ministry to work with the Superintendent here at the St. Ann [Municipal Corporation] for an estimate on those two areas to be prepared and given, so that we can find the funds to commence the repairs, especially to the public sanitary facilities,” he informed.

Minister McKenzie said that the Government is on a mission to enhance market facilities across Jamaica.

He noted that markets are vital economic hubs, particularly in resort areas like Ocho Rios.

“The Government is on a comprehensive market programme. The other day, the Prime Minister and I were in Hanover where we visited the market in Lucea and in Hopewell,” Mr. McKenzie said.

For his part, Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth & Job Creation, Senator the Hon. Matthew Samuda, said it is important to ensure that market infrastructure aligns with the country’s aspirations for growth and development.

He welcomed the commitment from Minister McKenzie to upgrade facilities across the island.

Senator Samuda informed that the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) is undertaking the design of a new structure to house the Ocho Rios Market.
