Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Hon Phillip Paulwell, has emphasised that the Government will continue to explore alternative and renewable energy solutions, despite the recent fall in global oil prices.
“Despite the fall in price of energy, Jamaica is even more resolute and committed to continue on its path of energy conservation efficiency and diversification to embrace the newer cleaner fuels and of course fully take on board renewables,” the Minister said.

Global oil prices have been trending down by a record 40 per cent since July 2014 and are expected to continue into 2016. However, Minister Paulwell said concerns that energy prices in Jamaica are too high are correct.
“Energy is probably the most significant aspect of production in Jamaica and it is too expensive,” Mr. Paulwell noted, responding to a comment by United States Ambassador to Jamaica, Luis G. Moreno, that Jamaica has some of the highest energy costs in the hemisphere.
The Minister said consistency in policy application, while ensuring that diversification takes place, is critical to ensure sustainability and growth in the sector.
“The energy sector is one that can create growth and development for our people,” Mr. Paulwell emphasised.
