The sum of $1.3 billion has been earmarked for the Energy Management and Efficiency Programme for the 2025/26 fiscal year.
The programme aims to promote energy efficiency in government facilities, and fuel conservation in road transportation by contributing to the avoidance of fuel imports.
Originally, the project, which commenced in November 2017 with an end date of November 2023, was further extended from December 2023 to December 2025.
Details are contained in the 2025/26 Estimates of Expenditures, now before the House of Representatives.
Several projects to be undertaken for the fiscal year 2025/26 are completion of the retrofitting of High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) purifiers to 20 government facilities and six hospitals, completion of national Integrated Energy Plan (IEP) number four, as well as installation of energy-efficient lighting in 50 public buildings.
Activities completed under the programme, as of December 2024, included finalisation of technical study (number two) to support Energy/Electricity Planning.
In addition, the National Integrated Energy Plan (number three) was completed; installation of the Urban Traffic Management System equipment, as well as deep retrofitting works at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), were completed.
The programme is being implemented by the Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport with funding by the European Union (EU), the Inter- American Development Bank (IDB), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
