Minister of Education and Youth, Hon. Fayval Williams, says it is imperative that the education sector provide an enabling environment for developing students’ abilities and channelling them in the direction of creativity, innovation and productivity.

“In this regard, the Transforming Education for National Development (TREND) [Programme], already well under way, is an important vehicle to help us achieve our goals,” Mrs. Williams said.

The Minister was speaking during the Forum for Innovations in Teaching, held at the National Arena on Thursday (January 25).

Mrs. Williams stated that the establishment of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) institutions, and expanded access to broadband services, laptops for students and teachers and other teaching aids are aimed at spurring better outcomes from schools.

“The education of our young people is not an end itself, but rather aimed at building their capacity to make a better world. In that context, making better use of technology in teaching and learning, improving physical and internet/broadband infrastructure, as well as providing resources for STEAM are aimed at enabling our students to take their place in our global community,” Mrs. Williams said.

She further noted that the Ministry is committed to transforming education through greater access, upgrading the school environment to enrich the learning experience, and enhancing the competences for a contemporary society.

“I also take this opportunity to commend our teachers for the invaluable work you are doing and preparing our students for today’s world and the one that we will inhabit in the future. We must all seek to share best practices and innovative ideas to prepare our young people for the local and global workforce,” Minister Williams said.
