Fire and Life Safety Awareness Week 2025, slated for October 26 to November 1, will be observed under the theme ‘Safe Homes, Safe Communities: The Power of Prevention’.

Speaking at the media launch, held at the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development on October 22, Deputy Commissioner in charge of Fire Safety, Prevention and Investigation at the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), Kevin Haughton, said that the theme underscores the powerful message that national resilience begins at home.

“The 2025 observance focuses on empowering households to take ownership of their safety and preparedness. We are encouraging Jamaicans to look closely at their home environment, identify risks, practise safe habits, instal and maintain smoke detectors, prepare emergency kits and know evacuation routes,” said Deputy Commissioner Haughton.

He also indicated the importance of a safe home, noting that “when we make our homes safer, we build stronger families, stronger communities and, ultimately, a stronger Jamaica”.

Mr. Haughton further noted that several activities designed to empower, educate and encourage Jamaicans throughout the Week will be held across the island, once the weather permits, considering the threat posed by Tropical Storm Melissa.

“On Sunday, October 26, we will host our National Church Service at the International Worship Centre in Mount Salem, St. James, setting the tone with thanksgiving and to seek God’s blessings upon this campaign. From Tuesday, October 28 to Friday, October 31, we will host a series of area expositions across the island, each designed to educate citizens and showcase community disaster preparedness initiatives,” he said.

Area 4 expo will be held on October 28 at Independence Park, Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland; Area 2 on October 29 at Claude Stewart Park, Port Maria, St. Mary; Area 1 on October 30 at St. William Grant Park, Kingston; and Area 3 on October 31 at Main Street near Bargain Village Plaza, May Pen, Clarendon. Each expo will begin at 10 a.m.

Fire and Life Safety Awareness Week will culminate with the Firefighter’s Ball, scheduled to take place on November 1 at the Princess Grand Jamaica Resort in Hanover.
