The Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China has donated $3.1 million towards hurricane preparedness and recovery efforts across Kingston and St. Andrew.
Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby, made the announcement in his statement at the monthly meeting of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) on Tuesday (November 11), at the Corporation’s downtown Kingston offices.
“This act of solidarity shows that true friendship is shown in moments of difficulty, and we are sincerely grateful for their continued partnership and support,” he said.
On behalf of the Government, Mayor Swaby extended heartfelt thanks to Jamaica’s partners, well-wishers, and supporters locally and abroad who have reached out with donations of supplies, equipment, and technical assistance to strengthen relief efforts, following Hurricane Melissa.
“While Kingston was spared catastrophic damage, we share in the grief of those who were not. We stand with them and pledge to support the national recovery effort in every way possible… . In times like these, we are reminded that Jamaica is one family. When one part of the island suffers, we all feel the pain,” he said.
In that spirit of unity and care, Mr. Swaby said the KSAMC Disaster Relief Unit has launched a coordinated effort to collect supplies for distribution to senior citizens and children’s homes across the six parishes hardest hit by the hurricane.
The donation period runs from November 10 to 30. Further details are on the KSAMC social media pages.
“We are doing this in partnership with our local and overseas partners. We know that our elderly and children are among the most vulnerable. We want to ensure that they are not forgotten during the period of recovery,” he said.
Mayor Swaby said donations may be dropped off at the KSAMC’s head office in Kingston.
In addition, the KSAMC is partnering with Jamaican entertainment personality Chris Diamond and other supporters who are mobilising assistance from the Jamaica diaspora and friends of Jamaica abroad.
Contributions from overseas can be made through Elegance Bar and Grill located in Stone Mountain, Georgia, in the United States.
“We invite everyone who can give, whether large or small, to bring comfort and relief to those whose lives have been shattered. Together, we can help them begin to rebuild,” Mayor Swaby said.
