Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for South West St. Andrew, Portia Simpson Miller says educational development has been the main area of focus in her constituency over the past 4 decades. “Of all the developments that have taken place in this constituency, the educational development of the people has been the area of greatest focus by me as Member of Parliament for the past forty years,” Mrs. Simpson Miller declared. She made the comments during her address at the official opening of the new state-of-the-art Union Gardens Infant School in her constituency on Wednesday, January 13.

By focusing on education, Mrs. Simpson Miller stated that “we have invested heavily in educational institutions; and in the provision of educational grants and scholarships.” She added that “we have produced in South West St. Andrew many teachers, lawyers, doctors, nurses, architects, nurses, builders, mechanics, welders, among many other professionals.”

The Member of Parliament said that education is the only sustainable route to the long term development of the community. She noted that “We have efficiently utilised constituency allocations of State resources through the Constituency Development Fund for educational development. We have also mobilised significant private funding of education. One of the vehicles for doing this has been through the Portia Simpson Miller Foundation,” she outlined. The education development programme in the constituency spans the full range of age groups from early childhood to adult education.

Mrs. Simpson Miller pointed out that “Union Gardens Infant School is now the most recent example of the commitment of my Government to early childhood education.” The multimillion dollar institution was made possible through a successful private-public sector partnership managed by the Union Gardens Foundation, which was established to guide the development of the Union Gardens Infant School project. Construction began in March 2015 and was completed in September 2015.

The modern environmentally friendly institution features a spacious auditorium and classrooms; covered walkway-linked buildings with play areas; and landscaped common areas, among other features. The school accommodates children, aged three and a half to five years, with a bus assigned to shuttle the children to and from school, at no cost.
