The Full Story

A meeting of key stakeholders to discuss the way forward for Jamaica’s education system, following the passage of Hurricane Melissa, is set for tomorrow (November 4).

The announcement was made by Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr. the Hon. Dana Morris Dixon, during a special press briefing on Hurricane Melissa recovery at Jamaica House in Kingston on November 3.

Minister Morris Dixon pointed out that she has been engaging with stakeholders such as Opposition Spokesperson on Education, Damion Crawford, and the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) since the weekend and will continue this process.

She emphasised the importance of continued partnership to facilitate the smooth reopening of all the nation’s schools.

“We’ll be having that meeting where we start the process of looking at what it looks like, especially for western Jamaica and for those in the east that have a lot of damage; how do we prevent the learning losses that we saw during COVID and how we can do things better than before,” the Minister said.

Tomorrow’s session will involve the JTA, the Jamaica Association of Principals of Secondary Schools, Association of Principals and Vice Principals, Jamaica Independent Schools Association, National Parent-Teacher Association of Jamaica, National Secondary Student Council, Jamaica Prefect Association, Jamaica Union of Tertiary Students, Jamaica Association of Chairmen of Secondary Schools, and the Jamaica Council of Churches.
