Minister of Education and Youth, Hon. Fayval Williams, says that empowering teachers with technology not only benefits students but also helps educators stay current with digital advancements in education.
The Minister, who was speaking to students, teachers and administrators at the Moneague College, St. Ann, on March 22, said it is against this background that the Government is committed to giving educators access to technological devices, to foster a “21st century learning experience for all students in Jamaica”.
“What we are doing here at the Moneague College… the handover of state-of-the-art laptops and a multimedia screen for the technology lab… is part of the continuing mission of upskilling teachers and bringing technology into classrooms,” the Minister told the gathering.
“This is a reaffirmation of the Government’s commitment to advancing education through technology and providing educators with the necessary resources to give all our students [from early childhood to tertiary] the chance to effectively compete [in a digitised world],” she added.
The Minister further emphasised the critical need for teachers to have access to laptops and other technological devices and that it is a high priority for the Ministry to integrate technology into all classrooms across the country in the quickest possible time.
She said that in today’s digital age, it is essential for educators to be equipped with the necessary tools to enhance the learning experience for students.
Mrs. Williams underscored that technology plays a vital role in modern education, enabling teachers to deliver more interactive and engaging lessons, adding that by providing teachers with laptops and technological devices, they can better incorporate multimedia elements, online resources, and interactive activities into their teaching methods.
“Empowering teachers with technology also makes learning more dynamic and relevant. It also reaffirms that Jamaica aims to create a more tech-savvy and innovative educational environment that prepares students for success in today’s digital world,” the Minister added.
