The Early Childhood Commission (ECC) will host its fifth certification fair in Region Three, which covers St. Ann and Trelawny, on June 23, at the St. Hilda’s High School in Brown’s Town, St. Ann.

This fair will focus on the Jamaica School Readiness Assessment for four-year olds.

The staging of these certification fairs forms part of the ECC’s strategy to have 100 early-childhood institutions (ECIs) certified by August 2017.

The Jamaica School Readiness Assessment is conducted in ECIs across the island each year to determine the readiness of children at age four to make the transition to primary school. Executive Director of the ECC, Karlene DeGrasse Deslandes, said that “this exercise not only allows for the identification of the children’s readiness academically, but also helps to determine their socio-emotional and behavioural skills.”

In preparation for the assessment, the ECC’s staff and field officers underwent training in May, while early-childhood practitioners commenced training on June 1.

Early-childhood practitioners in Region Three will be provided with additional information on the assessment, as well as services that are required to help them meet certification requirements, during the certification fair.

Four Regional certification fairs have been held in Region One, which covers Kingston and St. Andrew; Region Two – Portland, St. Mary and St. Thomas; Region Five – Manchester and St. Elizabeth, and Region Six – Clarendon and St. Catherine.

Mrs. DeGrasse Deslandes emphasised that the ECC is committed to working towards its goal of certifying 100 early-childhood institutions by August 2017. The list of certified ECIs may be viewed on the ECC’s website at ecc.gov.jm.
