The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has signed contracts totalling approximately $90 million for drainage works, which will benefit Plantain River Valley in St. Thomas, the area where one of the proposed agro parks is to be sited.
The works, which have been awarded to Pavement and Structure Limited, are to be carried out over two months, and will begin within two weeks.
Speaking at the signing and post-Sectoral press conference at the Ministry’s Old Hope Road location, on Thursday, May 9, portfolio Minister, Hon. Roger Clarke, explained that the drainage system is necessary to alleviate the flooding which occurs in the approximately 4,200 hectares of cane lands, when it rains.
The project falls under the European Union (EU) financial support for the flood mitigation component of the government’s sugar transformation programme.
