Leader of Government Business in the House of Representatives, Hon. Derrick Smith, says the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) has presented a copy of the draft political party registration regulations 2016 to his office.

“These draft regulations would be forwarded to the Office of the Chief Parliamentary Counsel for their attention,” Mr. Smith said.

He was speaking during a statement during the sitting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, September 13.

Mr. Smith said he has also received instruction from the ECJ for the drafting of the campaign financing regulations, which will also be sent to the Chief Parliamentary Counsel for urgent attention and action.

Leader of Opposition Business in the House, Phillip Paulwell, welcomed the announcements.

“We really are urging that the regulations be brought back as quickly as possible. It certainly would be very appropriate that these regulations are effected before any new elections in Jamaica,” he said.
