A draft Diaspora Policy will be presented at the 5th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference, which will be held from June 16 to 19, 2013 at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James.
“This policy will address issues of information, data collection (Diaspora database) and dissemination,” said Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Hon. Arnold Brown.
He was speaking during his contribution to the 2013/2014 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on May 15.
The State Minister said the policy will also deal with matters such as: network building within the Diaspora; the role of Information Communication Technology (ICT); citizenship; obligations and rights; trade and investment; Diaspora philanthropy; reaching the second and third generation and beyond; governance; implementation and monitoring of activities; and funding.
The conference, which has been re-branded to focus on trade and investment, will be held under the theme: ‘Nation on a Mission: Jamaica – Diaspora Partnership for Development’.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is organising the event, is seeking to attract between 350 and 500 participants, and efforts have been made to reach Jamaicans, who reside in other Caribbean islands.
