Residents of communities in the five parishes most severely impacted by Hurricane Melissa will be benefiting from health and relief assistance from United States-based Jamaican diaspora charity, Living Well Community Care Center.
The 30-member team of medical and health professionals and educators will be operating in the parishes of St. James, Trelawny, St. Ann, St. Elizabeth, and Westmoreland, conducting medical evaluations and treatment, and providing health education and relief supplies.
The mission involves partnership with the Jamaica 4-H Foundation 2016 Limited in support of the national recovery effort.
At the signing of the partnership agreement and handover of care packages at the 4-H Foundation’s Duke Street offices in Kingston on Monday (November 24), Managing Director of the Foundation, Peter Thompson, welcomed the support from the charity.
He emphasised the importance of partnership in Jamaica’s efforts to recover from the devastating effects of the storm.
“We have been reaching out to the Jamaican Diaspora, local enterprises and others, and the call has not fallen on deaf ears. Living Well stepped up to the plate… . We are grateful to have this partnership,” he said.
Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Living Well Community Care Center, Dr. Joan Williamson, who is a Jamaican, said that the team “wanted to come to Jamaica and make a difference”.
“Many of us are clinicians, many of us are medical professionals, some of us are educators, some of us just want to provide support. This group comes with a holistic approach,” she said.
Under the partnership, the Jamaica 4-H Foundation will facilitate the storage of relief items and coordinate the distribution of medical supplies, food, clothing, and other relief items donated by Living Well Community Care Center.
The Foundation is also assisting with logistical coordination and clearance requirements to ensure the timely deployment of resources.
Living Well Community Care Center provides health, social, and spiritual support services to underserved communities, with specific outreach efforts and initiatives focused on Jamaica.
