The Full Story

Designated vending zones have been established along sections of Orange Street, downtown Kingston, for the period December 18 to January 14, 2024.

The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) today (December 12), approved a Motion that will facilitate the undertaking for street vendors to ply their wares on the assigned sections during the busy festive season.

The Motion is in pursuant of Section four under the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation Sale of Goods Public Places Regulations 1986 and Section 51 of the Local Governance Act 2016.

Addressing the meeting of the KSAMC, Mayor of Kingston, Senator Councillor Delroy Williams, said the custom is usually permitted during the busy holiday shopping season.

“We are placing the Motion to designate the left-hand side of Orange Street beginning at Harbour Street to big tree for vending, and those areas are properly marked out for street vending between December 18, 2023, to January 14, 2024. This will allow our vendors, in an orderly way, to do business during the festive season,” he said.

The vendors will be allowed to operate up to 10 p.m. daily and 2:00 a.m. on Christmas Eve, December 24 into December 25.

Senator Williams informed that the vendors will be guided by other stipulations, which include no vending on the pedestrian sidewalks, that is, no placement of goods on the pedestrian sidewalks; and no blocking of stores.

“There is to be no hindering of vehicular traffic on Orange Street. Also, as part of the condition, they ought to make way for the delivery of goods to the stores and also the areas so designated ought to be kept free of waste,” the Mayor said.

He noted, too, that both the municipal officers and the police have agreed that they will monitor the space to ensure that the conditions are upheld.

The Mayor emphasised that there should be no sale of meat or dairy products in the space.

Meanwhile, the Mayor informed that better arrangements are being pursued for street vendors within the urban spaces where vending is allowed.

During today’s sitting, Councillor Venesha Phillips, officially crossed the floor to the Jamaica Labour Party caucus of the KSAMC.
