The Full Story

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has established a dedicated WhatsApp line, 876-447-0444, for persons with disabilities to communicate their needs as Jamaica braces for the impact of Tropical Storm Melissa.

Portfolio Minister, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., made the disclosure during Friday’s (October 24) special press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister.

He advised that through the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities (JCPD), social workers and community organisers have been geared up to review their contact lists for persons with disabilities.

Minister Charles said the team from the National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC) is focused on identifying vulnerable senior citizens so that the Ministry can be proactive in contacting them.

“We urge you, as we always do, to make sure that you look out for the persons with disabilities, the senior citizens and the persons, family members, friends, community members who need support,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister Charles indicated the emergency operations centre has been officially activated to assist with coordinating welfare and relief operations.

Jamaicans wishing to contact the emergency hotline may dial 876-922-9500-10.
