Declare Excess Money to Customs

The Customs Department is encouraging persons travelling with more than US$10,000 to declare it to Customs officials on entering any of the island’s airports. Customs regulations mandate that individuals entering the country must indicate if they are carrying currency or monetary instruments over US$10,000 or equivalent. Commissioner of Customs, Hector Jones notes that in recent times a number of persons have been charged for false declaration. “Bringing more than $10,000 is not illegal. What’s illegal is not declaring it,” Mr. Jones emphasised.
If an individual is charged for false declaration, under Section 209 of the Customs Act, he/she shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding five hundred thousand dollars or treble the value of the goods to which the offence relates, whichever is greater.
