The Full Story

The National Association of Deans of Discipline is hosting a series of virtual activities under the theme ‘Transforming Behaviour through Environment, Engagement and Empowerment in spite of COVID19’.

The second in the series of events will be held on Thursday (May 6) via Zoom at 10:00 a.m. The focus will be on Behaviour Transformation through Environment (school, home, and community).

Chairman of the planning committee and President of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information’s region one, Dean of Discipline, Sharon Wright, told JIS News that the virtual sessions are part of the ongoing response to indiscipline as well as addressing safety and security in schools.

The aim is to provide school leaders and practitioners with strategies to deal with indiscipline and also to highlight the importance of discipline in reducing crime and fulfilling individual and collective potential.

Ms. Wright said that the sessions will showcase the work of deans of discipline islandwide, share strategies for school-violence prevention, educate the public about safety procedures and practices in schools, share best practices of behaviour modification and transformation, and build a stakeholder network in education and behaviour transformation.

“The general public is invited to participate; however, education practitioners; tertiary, secondary and primary-levels students; parents and the business communities, are especially targeted,” she said.

Ms. Wright said that through the sharing of methods, techniques and strategies for transforming at-risk youth, each participant and patron will be better equipped to make a difference in transforming their lives”.

Another exposition is scheduled for May 13, which will focus on Behaviour Transformation through Empowerment (counselling, positive programmes).

The series of activities will culminate with a ‘Student Empowerment Day’ on May 20.  Students will engage in empowering activities to help them deal with issues that they face.
