Over the past 15 years, the Washington-based David “Wagga” Hunt Foundation has disbursed some 46 scholarships valuing over J$31million to students at Calabar High School and Kingston College (KC).

The achievement was lauded by Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Her Excellency Audrey Marks, at the Foundation’s 10th annual fundraising gala held in Washington DC on February 17.

“I commend the Foundation for its unwavering commitment to its mission of providing scholarships to deserving students,” she said.

She pointed out that this year, the organisation has increased its disbursements by 50 per cent, with 24 students at both institutions to receive scholarships amounting to $3.6 million.

Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Her Excellency Audrey Marks, is escorted on the red carpet by Chairman of the David “Wagga” Hunt Foundation, Christopher Hunt, as she arrives at the Foundation’s 10th annual fundraising gala in Washington DC on February 17.

Ambassador Marks said the Foundation also assists Jamaican students attending Howard University, demonstrating its commitment to supporting the educational journey of young people at home and abroad.

She noted that the organisation had achieved its fundraising target of US$20,000 for the night, which will go a far way in helping students turn their dreams into reality.

“The Government of Jamaica is proud to have the David “Wagga” Hunt Scholarship initiative as a partner in our shared vision of a brighter future for Jamaica,” Ambassador Marks said.

She commended the two honourees on the night, scientist and businessman Dr. Henry Lowe and football coach, Lorne Donaldson, noting that their “remarkable contributions have not only advanced their fields but illuminated the way for future generations”.

“Dr. Lowe’s innovations and service, alongside Mr. Donaldson’s commitment to women’s football, exemplify the spirit of excellence and community,” she noted.

The David “Wagga” Hunt Scholarship is named after the late KC past student, football coach, and community pillar.

It supports students who demonstrate academic excellence, active participation in extracurricular activities, and a need for financial assistance, ensuring that Hunt’s legacy of leadership and passion for sports continues to inspire.
