More than 300 students have benefited from a series of virtual workshops to assist in their preparation for the 2024 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) science-based examinations.
The sessions were held from April 23 to May 2 by the Scientific Research Council (SRC) in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Youth, University of the West Indies (UWI), University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) and the University of Technology (UTech), Jamaica.
“The overall goal was to help students improve their examination skills through practice and preparation,” Technical Information Officer of the SRC, Latanniya Johnson, told JIS News.
“Additionally, these workshops provided students with an opportunity to look at different strategies that they can employ to maximise the possibilities of getting a good grade,” she pointed out.
The workshops catered to Jamaican students from secondary institutions, community colleges, those taking evening classes, and other Caribbean nationals.
Ms. Johnson noted that having covered a comprehensive agenda and gained insight from Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) examiners, the participants have been equipped with invaluable resources and knowledge.
Educators and SRC Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) ambassadors also aided the students in their preparations.
“The students learned how to use available resources adequately as well as strategies they can employ for managing the pressure associated with exams,” Ms. Johnson told JIS News.
She said that the success of the virtual workshops underscores SRC’s commitment, along with its esteemed partners, to fostering excellence in science education and empowering students for academic success.
