The Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) will host its third anti-bullying workshop series on Thursday (March 16).
The online event will focus on the ‘Bystander Effect’ which happens when a group of people watch a bullying incident and no one responds.
Research and Development Manager at the CPFSA, Gleasia Reid Smith, told JIS News, that bullying is influenced by its social setting.
As such, she indicated that the day’s presentations will motivate bystanders to become anti-bullying advocates and offer genuine solutions to reduce offline and online peer animosity.
“This session aims to equip educators and administrators with a toolbox of ready-to-implement activities for classrooms, schools, and other settings and to also encourage bystanders to fight bullying,” Mrs. Reid Smith said.
Participants will explore strategies for dealing with bullying online and offline, while discussing the bystander effect; explore the reasons why individuals may be less likely to intervene in bullying situations; develop strategies for overcoming the bystander effect; and create a culture of kindness and empathy to prevent bullying and cyberbullying.
They will also learn about the bystander effect and how it applies to bullying and cyberbullying situations.
Parents, teachers, guidance counsellors, and deans of discipline are encouraged to participate in the session, which will be available through the Zoom platform.
Persons are invited to register at least 15 minutes before the 9:00 a.m. start.
